Parshiot for Yom Kippur

The Jewish Scapegoat

Leviticus 16:29-31: “This shall be a statute forever for you: In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether a native of your own country or a stranger who dwells among you. For on that day the priest shall make atonement for you, to cleanse you, that you may be clean from all your sins before the LORD. It is a Sabbath of solemn rest for you, and you shall afflict your souls. It is a statute forever.”

This week we are looking at the ‘Parshiot’ (‘Torah’ portions) and the ‘Haftorot’ (readings of the prophets) for ‘Yom Kippur’ (Day of Atonement).

Parashat Masei

G-d controls Israel’s borders

“These are the journeys of the children of Israel, who went out of the land of Egypt by their armies under the hand of Moses and Aaron. Now Moses wrote down the starting points of their journeys at the command of the LORD. And these are their journeys according to their starting points” (Numbers 33:1-2).

And so begins the ‘parshah’ (‘Torah’ portion) this week, ‘Parashat Masei’ (Journeys) found in Numbers 33:1 – 36:13; the corresponding ‘haftorah’ (reading of the prophets) is found in Jeremiah 2:4-28 -  4:1-2.

Parsha Ha'Azinu'

The L-rd our Rock

2 Samuel 22:2-3: “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; The God of my strength, in whom I will trust; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge; My Saviour”

The ‘parsha’ (‘Torah’ portion) of this week is ‘Parsha Ha’azinu’ (listen).

‘Parsha Ha’azinu’ is found in Deuteronomy 32:1–52; the corresponding ‘haftorah’ (reading of the prophets) is found in 2 Samuel 22:1–51.
‘Parsha Ha’azinu’ makes up the 53rd weekly ‘Torah’ portion in the annual Jewish cycle of ‘Torah’ reading, and the tenth in the book of Deuteronomy. This ‘parsha’ is read on the ‘Shabbat’ between ‘Rosh Hashanah’ and ‘Sukkoth’.
